Automotive lift safety

Automotive Lift Safety

Dealerships, service stations, and educational facilities in the United States and Canada are required to inspect their automotive lifts on an annual basis. Proper maintenance and operation of automotive lifts is critical to:

  • Ensure a safe work environment for technicians
  • Avoid damage to a customer's vehicle and company property
  • Comply with requirements from OSHA, insurance companies, and governing authorities

As an Associate Member of the Automotive Lift Institute (ALI), DEKRA inspects automotive lifts according to the ANSI/ALI ALOIM Standard for Automotive Lifts - Safety Requirements for Operation, Inspection, and Maintenance.

DEKRA does not sell lifts or parts and does not perform repair work, which allows us to provide an unbiased inspection with the safety and protection of our customers as our highest priority. Our ALI Certified Inspectors are trained and knowledgeable in all brands of all lift types for consumer and commercial vehicles.

Operator training services
In order to mitigate the potential risks and hazards in the use of vehicle lifts, it is important to not only consider the condition of the lift but its proper operation. DEKRA provides on-site training to teach operators:

  • How to safely load vehicles and operate the lift and its accessories
  • The importance of manufacturer safety controls and weight capacity restrictions
  • Proper execution of a lift safety policy to reduce risk between annual inspection
  • How to identify hazards such as damaged floor anchors, frayed cables and worn pulleys

Lift safety policy consulting

As improper maintenance or use of a lift can cause costly damage to customer vehicles or company equipment as well as injury to operators, the implementation and execution of a well-designed safety policy is crucial in every shop using a vehicle lift. DEKRA provides consulting services to create or optimize your vehicle lift policy to ensure compliance with the ANSI/ALI ALOIM standard including the creation of planned maintenance and operator training logs.
